StonExpo 2002
BALTIMORE – StonExpo is moving up in 2002 … and it’s not just a northern jaunt on the East Coast, either.
StonExpo 2002 features more educational and business opportunities than before, as the event shuttles up the seaboard on Dec. 5-7 to the Baltimore Convention Center.
With more than 20 seminars, StoneExpo 2002 increases the choices for learning from its run in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., last year. And, the 150-plus exhibitors make up a strong trade-show floor for the natural-stone industry.
The event also marks the annual convention of the Marble Institute of America (MIA), and the unveiling of the 2002 Pinnacle Awards recipients.
CATCH THE CORNERSTONE
The MIA also sponsors the Cornerstone Forum for continuing education for the stone trade – and, at StonExpo 2002, there are selections among the 25 sessions in the event’s three days to better anyone’s skill level in fabrication, maintenance and business.
For starters, there’s Introduction to Stone Design on Dec. 6, offered by Scott Lardner of Rocky Mountain Stone and Vince Migilore, the MIA’s technical director. It’s a survey course of production and supply, running from stone selection to surfaces and cladding – along with plenty of tips and techniques in stone sourcing.
Among other sessions dealing with basics are Put a Bit of Science in Your Business: Understanding Stone from Formation to Façade and Beyond on identifying dimensional stone from geologist Dr. Claude Rust on Dec. 5; and Designing a Stone Fabrication Shop on Dec. 6 by Keith Graves of HE Satterwhite Inc. and Kevin Padden from New Home Interiors’ Granite Division (and a regular Stone Business columnist).
Graves and Migliore, meanwhile, team up to tackle the tough issues with Stone Countertop Fabrication and Installation on Dec. 5. Other topics for in-the-field use include Stone Flooring Failures: Problems and Solutions on Dec. 7 from Fred Hueston of the National Center for Stone and Masonry Trades and Safe Design for Wet Areas by Gregory Mowat and Don Halvorson of Forensic Tile Consultants.
The Cornerstone seminars also address business topics, including How to Manage Commercial Stone Projects on Dec. 6 from Joe Kapcheck of the J.K. Kapcheck Co., and Stone Trends 2002 by MIA Education Director Vincent Marazita on Dec. 7.
The sessions also include a special two-seminar block on Dec. 5 detailing The Phoenix Project – the rebuilding and refacing of The Pentagon after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.
American Institute of Architects (AIA) members can earn continuing education learning unit credits at 18 of the 2002 Cornerstone Forum seminars.
