In what has to be the smallest (in total area) entry ever in Best of Home history, mosaic artist Julie Richey melds 13 different types of stone for two stunning pieces.
The stove backsplash is inspired by the prehistory paintings found in the Lascaux caves complex in southwestern France; patterns in the Yellow Moon granite countertops reminded the client of the cave paintings.
The other piece, with design help from Lynne Chinn, feature concentric circles cut from a single sheet of travertine on a Diamond Tech International DL 5000 diamond band saw. (Other cutting instruments included a Roman hammer and hardie) The mortar is tinted to match the kitchen grout. The entire piece was backbuttered, with mesh, in a wooden form; after removing the forms, the form remained rigid and didn’t need grouting.
