Photography Guidelines for Stone Business
Articles, Columns, News Items
Images should be offered to reproduce at a minimum of 3” X 5” at a resolution of 300 dpi. While there is no hard-and-fast rule about file size with this, it’s wise to assume that files should be at least 150K in size for a JPG. Files that are larger than this are welcome – actually, we prefer this, since larger files give an opportunity to use images for half-page and full-page reproduction, including covers.
Product Announcements
Images should be offered to reproduce at a minimum of 2” X 2” at a resolution of 300 dpi. Again, there is no standard rule about this, but assume that files should be at least 100K in size for a JPG.
IMPORTANT TIPS FOR ALL PHOTOS
Don’t assume that photos prepared for use on a Website will be sufficient. In most cases, they aren’t. Web-ready photos are often sized in low resolutions (72 dpi) for efficient use of bandwidth when loading Webpages; they may look just fine on a computer, but they’re too small for print reproduction.
Send photos as separate attachments in email when sending news releases, product announcements and other items involving text. Refrain from including photos within the text; doing so requires us to separate the photo image from the text in a software operation that sometimes diminishes the quality of the photo.
Stone Business can accept large (10MB and greater) emails, so feel free to add large photo images as attachments. If your email server limits the size of photos, consider using a large-file service such as yousendit.com to transmit photos. Stone Business also offers the opportunity for limited anonymous FTP transfer; if this is needed, contact emerson@stonebusiness.net for more information.
Stone Business also accepts images send on CD-ROM. Contact emerson@stonebusiness.net for the mailing address.
