Durfee Receives MIA Natural Stone Scholarship (Feb. 18)
The annual MIA award provides educational opportunities for aspiring fabricators, installers or administrative employees and administrative apprentices interested in
furthering their careers in the natural-stone industry. Applications for the scholarship include a essay on their commitment to the industry.
“I am usually the first one to work in the morning and among the last to leave each night,” Durfee wrote. “They say that time flies when you are having fun and I tend to believe that.”
He also noted that the favorite part of his job is the variety and learning opportunities that are presented to him each day.
“I have been with the company for just over three years and I love what I do,” he wrote. “I have no reason to believe that I will not be a member of this company for many years to come.”
Rich Booms Great Lakes Marble and Granite president, said, “We allow Joe to solve problems on his own and that has taken a load off the rest of the management team, allowing us to focus on more-strategic goals.
“We trust Joe to help make decisions that impact our company’s future, and we think Joe would excel as a leader in this great industry of ours.”
The MIA established the scholarship in 2004; the award covers travel and registration costs for one or more recipients to StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas and the MIA’s Annual Meeting. It offers the scholarship winner the opportunity to gain valuable technical and practical knowledge, meet and network with leading stone professionals, deepen his or her commitment to a career in the stone industry, and explore his or her potential for future leadership.
Durfee received his award during the annual MIA Awards Luncheon during StonExpo/Marmomacc Americas in Las Vegas last month.
