He adds that Phoenix Associates did the work on the store in two separate components, the first being a large block wall at the rear of the store which was completed in late 2008. A crew averaging eight-to-10 people then returned in February 2009 and worked until late June installing the brick, masonry and stone components.
Zegouros says he’s quite pleased with the end result of the job, as are others involved with the project.
Both Fore Solutions’ Zuchman and Next Phase’s Ames speak about the importance of using natural materials while stressing the regional look the stone provides. And, says WBRC’s Rich, there’s also the matter of durability.
“Hannaford was very concerned about the durability and life-expectancy of materials,” he says. “We have long winters and snow removal goes right up to the face of the building. Salt applications can be very aggressive, so an exterior masonry unit was a popular choice.”
Hannaford’s Gray calls the stone “a challenging element” because of its need to work with the brick in terms of color and scale. And, she agrees about its durability.
“It’s very sustainable in the long-term, which is great,” she concludes. “It’s going to be very low maintenance. It’s just a natural element, and it reads that way.”
