His connection is more than an appreciation, however. He’s been involved in restoration efforts – he’s now helping to create the American Friends of Italian Monujmental Sculpture, a non-profit group, to work with the city of Genoa – and, in the past year, found a way to share some of the wonders of the site.
It may be a bit late to put Staglieno: The Art of the Marble Carver on the Christmas list, but anyone with an appreciation of worked stone will appreciate Arnold’s look at the cemetery’s magnificent sculptures. It’s also more than a tourbook; Arnold explains the process and the culture behind the carvings, and focuses on detail often missed by the casual eye.
