“I don’t mind getting dirty, but there’s still the business end that has to be taken care of,” he says. “I want to make sure all the guys can make decisions on their own, so I can give more time to thinking about the business end.”
For instance, Pantano says he wouldn’t mind researching importing slabs – although Frank’s has a reputation for buying the best from its suppliers. And, he says, he’d definitely combine that research with a little vacation, perhaps to Brazil.
In the meantime, he’ll just keep following in the footsteps his father started putting down almost 40 years ago.
“Other shops have come and gone, and I think they’ve realized how hard a job this is,” Carmine Pantano concludes. “If you don’t have your heart in it you aren’t going to last in this business.”
