Travertine and other calcareous stone post import numbers that clearly beat last July. Unfortunately, it’s a different situation with granite.
The recovery remains a bit slow for dimensional stone through the first six months of the year.
An uneven month, as most categories go a bit flat after a strong May. Mixed results as the industry makes the turn for the second half of the year.
Stone charges ahead in May, fueled by big increases in granite value and volume and good performances from the marble sector. Other stone categories offer mixed results.
Granite takes a bit of a stagger – mainly in volume – in U.S. dimensional-stone imports this April. Marble’s no winner either, but travertine turns in a strong performance.
Is the recovery continuing for stone? The data from U.S. ports-of-entry offers a mixed report; most categories and countries are building up from 2010, but a single country — and it’s a big one — may cast some uncertainty.
The shortest month of the year offers some of the smallest numbers, but the 2011 totals tend to top 2010’s performance.
Granite shipments remain strong at the start of 2011, with Brazil finding hot competition from China to be #1. Travertine also shows signs of good recovery, according to a Stone Business analysis of U.S. import data.
Granite and slate have an exceptional month. Marble is here and there, travertine gets its growth outside of Turkey, and other calcareous stone still suffers from the Lebanese letdown.
