Briefs - January 2005

• Approxmately $17 million in stone is heading from the Indian state of Rajasthan to China for construction associated with the 2008 Olympic Games in Bejing. Vineet Patni, a Kishangarh marble exporter, told the IndiaExpress Bureau that ordered materials include granite, marble tiles, slabs and other stonework.
• The Italian Trade Commission will sponsor “The Natural Stone Industry of Italy – International Sourcing, Selection and Fabrication” at the Architectural Stone and Ceramic Tile Exposition (ASCTEX) at Neocon in Chicago on June 13-15. Vince Marazita of Marazita and Associates will be the presenter.
Landmark Stone will reopen a limestone quarry near Waikerie, South Australia, and begin extracting stone for the first time in three decades, according to the Australian Broacasting Corp. The first order of stone – five cubic meters – will be used to restore the Savings Bank building in Adelaide.

Briefs - December 2004

• The Marble Institute of America recognized Joseph Kapcheck, president of J. Kapcheck & Co. in Des Plaines, Ill., with the 2004 Migliore Award for Lifetime Achievement. Kapcheck, noted in the award for “his extraordinary contributions to the natural-stone industry,” served as MIA’s president in 1999. The award is named for Vincent R. Migliore, a world-renowned stone expert and MIA’s technical director from 1997-2003.
Keystone Tools Co. recently opened a new retail store in Anaheim, Calif. The Los Angeles tool-and-equipment distributor also added service trucks in Oregon and Texas.
Robert Smith, a lead installer and field supervisor at Great Lakes Granite and Marble in Redford, Mich, won the 2004 Migliore Natural Stone Education Scholarship from the Marble Institute of America Inc. (MIA). The scholarship paid Smith’s travel and registration expenses to attend StonExpo 2004 in Los Angeles in late October.

StonExpo Federation Inc. initiated a exhibitor advisory board for its annual trade show, with the first meeting set for StonExpo 2003 in Atlanta in early December. Initial members are Dan Devlin, Hard Rock Tool; Terrence Meck, Rolling Rock Stone; Phil Mularoni, Marmo Meccanica; and Allen Turk, Precision Drive Systems – Columbo. (Additional members will be named before the event.)
Boston Tile will be the exclusive distributor in key New England markets of RoSan, an extensive line of proprietary mosaic and complementary stone products by award-winning designer Rudy Santos. Boston Tile is part of East Coast Tile Imports, a 28-store group comprised of Best Tiles, TileAmerica!, and Classic Ceramic Tile (New Jersey).

Briefs - August 2004

IWT Tesoro Corp. of Westport, Conn., recorded 1Q 2004 revenue of $9.6 million, showing a 42-percent increase from the same period last year, IWT is the parent company of International Wholesale Tile Inc., a Palm City, Fla.-based distributor of ceramic, porcelain and natural-stone products.
Marva Stone & Design Inc., a Beltsville, Md., distributor of natural stone, recently added Cambria quartz surfaces. Marva, with a territory including Washington, Richmond, Va.,and Virginia Beach, Va., previously offered only granite, marble, travertine and other stones.
Wishstone Chisel & Mallet Inc. of Gainesville, Ga., will provide hand-carved stone medallions for the new baseball stadium in St. Louis. Stone artist and carver Gabe Drueke will put 11 original designs into Indiana limestone for the structure, which will open for the 2006 season.
ETemplate Systems reaches agreement with Roger Shaw & Associates Inc. of Dallas to represent ETemplate Photo™ Millwork Version for the commercial architectural millwork market in North America. The new version of the electronic-templating software is geared for field measuring at building-construction sites.
• Miami-based China Granite Corp. announces the acquisition of a quarry with estimated reserves of more than 400,000 m² of green crystal stone near Li Rui Ming, China.  The company operates two quarries and processing facilities in Shandong province, with products sold in China, Korea and Japan; the company is now seeking U.S. distributors.
